Event photo sharing without account signup
Every form field you add to a signup flow loses you a percentage of users. Name: fine. Email: getting annoying. Password: a lot of people just closed the tab. Confirm your email: whoever is still here is your most determined guest, and at a wedding that person is probably your sister.
Account creation is where participation goes to die. It made sense when software was delivered on discs and you needed a license. It makes no sense when you're asking someone to upload a photo they took ninety minutes ago before they forget about it entirely.
What your grandmother will not do
She will not create an account for a one-time upload. Not because she's bad with technology, but because it's a completely unreasonable ask. She arrived at the event, she took photos, and now you want her to enter personal information into a form, choose a password she'll never use again, and verify an email before she can share a photo with you. She'll say she'll do it later. She will not do it later.
Your college friend who had two glasses of champagne will not remember the password she created while toasting. She'll hit "forgot password," the email will land in a different inbox, and eventually she'll give up and send you a compressed screenshot through iMessage.
These are not edge cases. This is most people at most events.
What actually removes the barrier
Browser-based upload accessed through a QR code is the format that works. The guest points their phone at a code, a page opens in their browser, they pick photos from their camera roll, and they tap upload. No app store, no account, no stored credentials.
The whole thing takes about 30 seconds if they know which photos they want. Maybe 90 seconds if they scroll through looking for the good ones. They do not need to think about a password. They do not need to confirm an email. They do not need to remember they did this when they get home.
The tradeoff is worth it
When you skip accounts, you lose some data. You won't know which guest uploaded which photo. You can't reach out to a specific person to ask for more from a particular moment. You get photos without attached names.
That's a real tradeoff. And it's almost always the right one, because the alternative is fewer photos with better metadata. Most people would rather have the photos.
If attribution matters, some tools let guests optionally type their name before uploading. Optional being the key word. When it's optional, some guests fill it in and most don't, which is exactly what you'd expect. But you still get the photos from everyone, not just the ones who bothered.
The events where photo collection works are the ones that require almost nothing from guests. The events where it fails are the ones where organizers added friction thinking it would help them stay organized. It doesn't. Organize the photos yourself after. Get them first.
If your photo sharing tool requires an account, it will lose most of your guests before they finish signing up. Find one that doesn't.
